Call for Folk Art! Submissions Due by August 21
The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) is pleased to announce a Call for Art for an upcoming folk art exhibition.
We are accepting folk art entries in a variety of mediums and materials including textiles, ceramics, painting, sculpture, woodworking, calligraphy, music, dance, metal, paper, and more. Not all art will be accepted -- only those deemed to be folk art.

What is folk art?
Folk art reflects culture, history, and daily life
Cultural Representation. It embodies the history, heritage, traditions, or identity of a community, region, or country.
Utilitarian & Decorative. Pieces are typically created by self-trained artists for everyday use or community performance..
Generational Techniques. Folk art is created with skills and traditional designs that are passed down orally and practically.
Examples include duck decoy wood carving, bead work on Native American clothing or jewelry, painting such as rosemaling, music such as mariachi and polka, storytelling of community lore, and Fraktur calligraphy writing.
Performing artists can submit pictures of themselves or group in their traditional costumes or holding their instrument. Historical festivals may want to submit pictures of folk-art taking place at their festival. Folk music, dance, and theater entries can be enhanced with instructions/QR codes that help visitors hear your audio and/or watch your video online. (we can assist with this)
Submissions due by Friday, August 21
Submit (what, photos, size, price, comments) by Friday, August 21 to treyeverettcreates@gmail.com. You will drop off your art at our gallery in Thief River Falls August 31, September 1, or September 2. The exhibit will open September 3 until the end of November at our NWMAC gallery at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. Nordic Folk Arts Fellowships and Grants Deadline September 15
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) is pleased to announce the opening of its 10th annual competition for Nordic Folk Arts & Cultural Traditions in the Upper Midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan).
Two kinds of awards are available — fellowships for artists and grants for public programs and community projects. All of their grants encourage both the practice of folk arts and cultures and the presentation of these arts to public audiences.
Through these fellowships and grants, ASF extends its reach beyond New York to foster the perpetuation of Nordic traditional arts and skills in the Upper Midwest, while also promoting cultural exchange between the U.S. and Nordic countries.

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is announcing a Call for Art on the theme “Around the Farm.”
Farming is more than a job or a career. It is fundamental to our community's way of life, part of our region's cultural identity and history, and deeply rooted in where and how we live, work, and play. This art exhibit will celebrate farm life and farming and will highlight the importance of agriculture in the lives of residents of our northwest Minnesota region through art.
The exhibit will be held in January and February of 2025 at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. The featured artist is Beau Bakken of Hallock.
Art will be around the theme of farms, farming, farm machinery, harvest, farmland, agricultural heritage, farm animals, and farm life. Artwork must be original from any art medium including painting, mixed medium, drawing, mosaic, fiber arts, writing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and more.
Submission deadline is December 6, 2024 and limited to two submissions. Send dimensions, medium, title, sale price, and where you are from, along with a photo of the artwork to treyeverettcreates@gmail.com. We welcome submissions from our seven county Minnesota service area including Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau counties. Physical artwork will be dropped off at the gallery in Thief River Falls in mid-December. Date to be determined.

FELLOWSHIPS FOR ARTISTS
Fellowships for artists deepen the skills of master artists; foster relationships among masters of artistic and technical skills and their apprentices, and encourage the development of traditional skills and the perpetuation of skills from generation to generation; and encourage the awareness of folk traditions by creating innovative projects with wide visibility and public appeal.
GRANTS FOR
PUBLIC PROGRAMS & COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Grants for public programs and community projects encourage the preservation of Scandinavian cultural traditions through the support of community festivals, celebrations, and heritage events as well as workshops, performances, classes, and demonstrations. Applicants for public programs grants must be nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations.
