7.22.26 Ross Hier & Beau Bakken
Artists Beau Bakken of Hallock and Ross Hier of Crookston were the featured artists this week. Their work is featured in the exhibit Iron and Feathers: Art of the Northwest is open through August at the Historic Fournet Building.
The Artist Reception will be on August 13 from 6 to 7:30 PM. Lake Bronson Violinist Eden Johnson will be playing. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The exhibit will close after the reception.
For this exhibit, Ross concentrated on birds. He prefers to use watercolors on paper. Beau’s work is in acrylic on canvas. His work focuses on buildings and vehicles — old trucks, tractors, machinery, and elevators— that capture interesting scraps of light on metal. Both artists discussed their practice, process, our region, and more! Many pieces of the art is for sale.
10.22.25 Megan Sugden
Hallock Photographer Megan Sugden has a photo in our current exhibit Artists of NW Minnesota at our gallery at Northland Community and Technical College. She's also in our artist booklet, has received grants, and submitted work into our annual exhibit (and won an award). Megan's photography includes northern lights and night sky images (Kittson County Skies) and portraits. Megan’s websites are meganphoto.com and kittsoncountyskies.com. Her photos, including family portraits, are often taken on her family farm, which she calls her outdoor studio. She includes unique items as backgrounds in the Northern Lights shots (tractors, old buildings, highway signs, and other spots in Kittson County).
9.10.25 Dennis Kinkead
Hallock Visual Artist, Metal Worker, and Sculptor Dennis Kinkead’s artwork including metal work and watercolor paintings is featured in our current exhibit Designz in Metal at the Carnegie Library in Thief River Falls. Dennis spoke about how he created the art, his background, and the art itself. The exhibit includes furniture, a metal crow and raven, roses, a dragon, and paintings. Watercolor painting is new to him, but you couldn’t tell. He follows and learns a lot from an instructor Henry Lee (Blue Heron Arts) on YouTube who offers weekly online classes. Everything in the exhibit is for sale (except for the poppy painting) and Dennis accepts commissions. You can email him at dkinkead1946@gmail.com. The exhibit is open until October 8. 2.5.25 Beau Bakken
Hallock Artist Beau Bakken spoke about his art, the background of and his work in the current exhibit Around the Farm, his artistic influences, painting murals, and more. He continues to think about what his high school art teacher Kay Rosengren told him,“Paint what you see and not what you think you see.” He is the featured artist in the current NWMAC Gallery exhibit Around the Farm. 10.31.23 Loren Younggren
Hallock Photographer Loren Younggren, owner of Younggren Photography, received a quick turnaround grant last year for location lighting equipment. The equipment allows him to get out and take location photos easier. Loren spoke about his photography and how things have changed over the years. His business — Younggren Photography offers framing services for artwork in addition to photography services. Loren also spoke about being a Kittson County Commissioner and his artwork in past NW Minnesota annual exhibits. Finally, Loren goes all out for Halloween and his yard is not-to-miss. This year he created a haunted trail open to all visitors. Listen for details!
8.29.23 Darcey Engen
Darcey Engen, Co-Founder of Sod House Theater based in Minneapolis, spoke about the theater company and some upcoming shows in our region. Sod House will be putting on their show TABLE in Crookston on September 21 at the Eagles Club and in Hallock on September 23 at Far North Spirits. The NWMAC provided funding for the Hallock show. Darcey spoke about the theater company, the upcoming shows, the cast, and their work to bring theater all over Minnesota. 8.15.23 Shannon Christenson
Kittson Central Kindergarten Teacher Shannon Christenson spoke about Camp Art at Kittson Central School in Hallock. The NWMAC has been providing funding to bring in 3 artists for 4 days in the summer to Kittson Central. Camp Art is for students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. This year Camp Art took place the week of August 7 and included Visual Artist Teresa Cox, who led students into the wonderful world of messy art by making plant sculptures; Karla Nweje, who taught dance that explores the movements of insects; and, Jon Lurie who guided the campers to write about waterways. 2.15.22 Connie Nelson
Hallock Artist Connie Nelson spoke with Pioneer 90.1’s Ron West this week. Connie created a mural series of 20 4x8 panels along Highway 75 in Hallock last year with a grant from the NWMAC. Connie received the Artist of the Year Award from the NWMAC last year. Nominations are open for Of the Year Awards, including Artist of the Year, Arts Advocate of the Year, and NW Star Award.
