An attorney from Springboard’s Minnesota Lawyers for the Arts (MnLA) program will cover intellectual property for visual and performing artists, focusing on copyright and trademark. Learn the difference between the two, how and why to register them, and how both can be used to protect your brand and your creative work.
This workshop is part of a series of virtual workshops being presented in partnership with Hennepin County Library. Meet the Presenter
Instructor: Hannah Lutz (she/her), Senior Associate, Taft
Bio: Hannah focuses her practice on trademark and copyright matters. She counsels clients in all areas of trademark portfolio management, and on trademark clearance searches in the U.S. and abroad. Hannah additionally advises clients regarding copyright protection, licensing, domain issues, UDRP proceedings, advertising and branding online and on social media, advertising claims, talent and influencer agreements, publicity rights, contests, sweepstakes, and promotions.
Prior to joining Taft, Hannah worked as an intellectual property associate at a well-known regional firm in Minneapolis. She also has experience prosecuting trademark applications including counseling on and responding to Office Actions, as well as filing and pursuing opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Hannah earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School and her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and music from the University of Chicago. While in law school, Hannah served as the Executive Managing Editor of the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law.

Led by poet and bookmaker Brendan Stermer, this two-week course offers an introduction to the rich history of small press publishing in western Minnesota and a hands-on opportunity to participate in the bookmaking process.
Session 1: History of Publishing in MN
Learn about the history of small press publishing in our region and interact with a variety of handmade books—dating back to the small press boom of the 1970s — produced by western Minnesota artists and publishers.
Session 2: Hands-On Bookmaking
Learn a few basic bookmaking techniques while assisting with the assembly of a new, limited-edition collection by local poet Casey Fuller. All participants will receive a free signed copy.

Live Sound Basics – Fergus Falls Offered by Springboard for the Arts
IN-PERSON, WORKSHOP Learn the basics of setting up and running live sound in this hands-on workshop designed for musicians, artists, performers, and anyone who works with audio at events. This session will cover how to set up PA system, as well as audio signal flow and mixing basics, safety considerations, and how to troubleshoot common sound problems, such as feedback. No technical background required! Space is limited to 30 participants to allow for discussion and individual questions. The Portrait is a hands-on workshop focuses on the art of portraiture as a tool for storytelling and representation. Participants explore lighting, composition, and collaboration with subjects to create images that reflect identity, presence, and lived experience. Strike a Pose is a hands-on photography workshop focused on using light to shape mood, depth, and intensity in portraiture led by In Progress artist and one time resident of Crookston - Tomas Leal.
Participants will explore techniques such as directional lighting, high-contrast setups, and shadow control to create bold, expressive images. Through guided demonstrations and practice, photographers will learn how to transform simple setups into striking, dramatic portraits that emphasize emotion, texture, and form.
